하고, 와, 이랑

Keyword #
With, And

3 Sentence Summary of This Lesson:
  • Korean uses 하고 and 이랑/랑 for casual "with/and," while 와/과 are formal equivalents used in writing or official contexts.
  • 이랑/랑 and 와/과 change depending on whether the preceding word ends in a consonant (batchim), but 하고 stays the same.
  • Formal forms often pair with 함께 or 같이 (both meaning "together") to emphasize doing something together, though these can also be used casually.

To say “with” in Korean, you have a few options.

하고 and 이랑

하고 and 이랑 are the most casual ways to say “with.” They are both equally casual and used commonly in daily life conversations. They often get translated to “and” instead of “with”, depending on the sentence.

For 이랑, the 이 can be omitted depending on whether there’s a batchim or not. When there is a batchim, use 이랑 and when there isn’t, use 랑.

하고 does not change whether there’s a batchim or not.

철수하고 영미는 영화를 보고 있어요. (Chul Soo and Young Mi are watching a movie.)
이거랑 이거 주세요. (Can I have this and this, please?)
오늘은 친구랑 놀 거예요. (I will hang out with my friend today.)

와/과

와 or 과 mean the same and using which depends on the preceding letter, whether there is a batchim or not. 와/과 is more formal than 하고 and 이랑. You will most often see them in official documents, or in other written forms. Depending on the sentence, 와/과 can mean “and” or “with.”

They are often paired with words like 함께 and 같이, which both means “together.”

친구와 같이 등교합니다. (I go to school with my friend.)
게임과 음악을 함께 즐길 수 있어요. (You can enjoy both games and music.)
오렌지와 딸기를 먹어요. (I eat oranges and strawberries.)

같이 and 함께 can be omitted, but it adds the meaning of “togetherness.” These two words can also be used with 하고 and 이랑.

When paired, 함께 is more formal than 같이.

In case of 같이, it can also mean “like” depending on the context. The distinction depends entirely on the context.

동물과 같이 행동해선 안됩니다. (We must not act like animals.)
